Taupunkt e.V. | Neta Weiner Mereum – Oys to Men, Solo-Performance
Rap meets the accordion in Neta Weiner’s multilingual
solo performance, which shifts between hip-hop, klezmer, spoken word and singing,
as well as between Hebrew, Yiddish, Arabic, German and English.
Weiner is a Berlin-based musician, rapper, playwright
and performance artist, as well as co-founder and lead singer of System
Ali, the multilingual Palestinian-Jewish hip-hop collective that
has its roots in Jaffa. Drawing on his solo album ‘Pinui
Binui’ and nearly two decades of collaboration with System Ali, ‘Oys to Men’ explores
the space between Jewish identity and hip-hop,
community and exile, belonging and home. Sharp
social and political commentary meets intimate
stories, multilingual rap and spoken word.
Weiner’s work spans music, theatre, dance, film and television and has been
presented internationally at festivals, in theatres and cultural institutions.
At the heart of his musical practice lies the
language itself: its rhythm and musicality, the stories it
carries within it, and the ability to switch between languages,
without blurring their differences.
Armed with an accordion, a microphone and a
multilingual repertoire of rhymes, Weiner transforms these tensions
into a raw, high-energy solo performance: part concert, part
storytelling and unmistakably hip-hop.
