“We humans have ruined the world. We have lost the ability to connect with our minds and our feelings. We feel guilt. And shame. We invite you to come together and become one again. With the other souls around us.” In search of a leader, a group of birds embarks on a dangerous journey. In the end, they discover that the power of direction and wisdom lie within themselves, that true community and cohesion are possible even without leadership. The performance “The Circle” draws on a motif from the verse poem “The Conference of the Birds” by the Sufi poet Farid ud-Din Attar, which ranks among the most significant works of Persian literature. In Çağlar Yiğitoğulları’s interpretation, the birds are replaced by a narrator
and a wide range of physical and emotional forms of expression inspired by the pre-Zoroastrian religion of Yezidism.

The preparatory work for “The Circle” was carried out, amongst other places, during a residency at KOMPLEX in the summer of 2024. The finished piece effectively returns to one of its places of origin.
