OTTLA – FRANZ KAFKA’S FAVOURITE SISTER

The play tells the story of Ottla David’s life in Prague with her family
and her deportation to Theresienstadt. All three of Franz Kafka’s sisters
were murdered in the Shoah. Ottla looks after
children in an orphanage in the ghetto. Preserved letters to her
two daughters in Prague serve as direct contemporary accounts: the
events come to a head. A camp doctor tries to save her. Later,
he recounts to Vera, Ottla’s daughter, his experiences in Theresienstadt,
which he also lived through with their shared mother. For Ottla,
the spiritual connection to her brother remained ever-present even during this time;
the play expresses this through quotations from Kafka.
